Most panels last 25–40 years, but age alone isn't always the indicator. Watch for breakers that trip frequently, a panel that feels warm to the touch, flickering lights under normal load, or a home that still has a fuse box. If you're planning to add an EV charger, generator, hot tub, or major appliance, your current panel may not have the capacity to support it safely. When in doubt, have it assessed. Catching a failing panel early is far less expensive than dealing with the alternative.

A panel upgrade replaces the breaker box inside your home. A service upgrade increases the amount of power coming into your home from the utility — typically from 100 amps to 200 amps. Sometimes you need one, sometimes both. Older homes especially tend to need a service upgrade before they can support modern electrical demands. We'll assess your current setup and tell you exactly what's needed and why.

Only if it's connected correctly. Plugging a generator directly into an outlet or running extension cords throughout the house is dangerous and can cause backfeed — which puts utility workers at risk and can damage your home's wiring. A proper generator inlet with an interlock kit allows you to safely connect a portable generator to your panel and power specific circuits without the risk. It's a straightforward install and one of the best preparedness investments a homeowner can make.

A true electrical emergency is anything that poses an immediate safety risk. A burning smell near your panel or outlets, sparking wires, a breaker that won't reset, flickering lights paired with a burning odor, or any sign of electrical fire. If you suspect an active hazard, turn off the affected circuit at the panel if it's safe to do so, and call us immediately. Don't ignore warning signs hoping they'll resolve on their own. Electrical issues that go unaddressed have a way of becoming much larger problems.

A dedicated circuit serves a single appliance or piece of equipment — meaning it has its own breaker and isn't shared with anything else on the panel. Most modern appliances that draw significant power require one: EV chargers, air conditioners, refrigerators, washing machines, sump pumps, and workshop equipment are common examples. If you're frequently tripping breakers on a specific circuit, or planning to add a major appliance, a dedicated circuit is likely the right solution.

A thorough electrical inspection covers your panel, wiring, outlets, switches, grounding, bonding, and any visible code concerns. We'll walk through the home with you, document what we find, and give you a clear picture of what's safe, what needs attention now, and what can wait. There's no pressure — just honest information so you can make informed decisions about your home.

Basement finishing typically requires new circuits for lighting, outlets, and any appliances going in the space. Depending on your panel's current capacity, you may also need a subpanel added to support the load. Code requirements for basement electrical work — including AFCI and GFCI protection — have become more specific in recent years, so it's important to work with a licensed electrician who knows current NEC standards. We handle basement electrical from rough-in through completion, and if the job calls for permits or inspections, we'll walk you through the options and take care of the paperwork.

Older wiring (particularly knob-and-tube or aluminum wiring) can present real safety risks, especially in homes that have had additions, renovations, or increased electrical loads over the years. Signs of concern include frequently tripping breakers, discolored outlets, a burning smell near switches or panels, or a home built before 1980 that hasn't had a wiring evaluation. A professional inspection is the only reliable way to know what you're working with.

Most home EV charger installations start with a Level 2 charger, a 240-volt circuit that charges significantly faster than a standard outlet. The process involves installing a dedicated circuit from your panel to the garage or charging location, mounting the charger unit, and ensuring your panel has the capacity to support the added load. If your panel is older or already near capacity, we'll let you know upfront whether an upgrade is needed before the charger goes in. The installation itself is typically straightforward and completed in a single visit.
